Alphy School Mathematics
Pre-Algebra
Building confidence, fluency, and problem-solving skills in mathematics
Course For Grade 7
Course Overview
Welcome to Pre-Algebra. This course develops the essential mathematical knowledge and habits of mind students need for success in algebra and later mathematics courses. Students will learn to represent mathematical ideas clearly, explain their reasoning, use appropriate strategies, and apply mathematics to familiar and unfamiliar situations.
Lessons combine clear explanations, guided examples, practice activities, problem-solving tasks, and regular review. Students are encouraged to ask questions, learn from mistakes, and develop confidence through steady progress.
Course Goals
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Use mathematical language, symbols, diagrams, tables, and graphs accurately.
- Simplify expressions and solve equations and inequalities using logical steps.
- Work confidently with integers, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, and percentages.
- Recognise relationships and represent them using tables, graphs, and equations.
- Apply geometry and measurement formulas to practical problems.
- Communicate solutions clearly and check whether answers are reasonable.
- Develop persistence, organisation, and independent learning habits.
Course Units
Unit 1: Variables, Expressions, and Integers
Use variables, evaluate expressions, apply the order of operations, and perform operations with integers.
Unit 2: Solving Equations
Understand equality and solve one-step equations using inverse operations and mathematical reasoning.
Unit 3: Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities
Solve multi-step equations and inequalities, use the distributive property, and represent solutions on a number line.
Unit 4: Factors, Fractions, and Exponents
Work with factors, prime factorisation, fractions, powers, and the laws of exponents.
Unit 5: Rational Numbers and Equations
Compare and operate with rational numbers and apply these skills when solving equations.
Unit 6: Ratio, Proportion, and Probability
Use ratios and proportions to model real situations and calculate and interpret basic probabilities.
Unit 7: Percents
Solve problems involving percent increase and decrease, discounts, tax, commission, and simple applications.
Unit 8: Linear Functions
Recognise linear relationships and connect equations, tables, graphs, slope, and intercepts.
Unit 9: Real Numbers and Right Triangles
Classify real numbers and apply the Pythagorean theorem to solve problems involving right triangles.
Unit 10: Measurement, Area, and Volume
Calculate perimeter, area, surface area, and volume, and apply measurement formulas to practical contexts.
How Students Will Learn
Understand
Learn new concepts through explanations, visual models, worked examples, and classroom discussion.
Practise
Build fluency through carefully chosen exercises, retrieval practice, and regular review.
Apply
Use mathematics to solve real-world problems and explain strategies in more than one way.
Reflect
Check solutions, learn from errors, and set practical goals for improvement.
Assessment and Progress
Student progress will be monitored through a balanced range of activities, including:
- Classwork and guided practice
- Short quizzes and retrieval activities
- Chapter tests and review tasks
- Problem-solving and application activities
- Class participation, mathematical communication, and independent work
Students will receive feedback that helps them identify what they understand, what they need to practise, and how they can improve.
Course Resources
- Google Classroom: the main platform for announcements, resources, assignments, and practice work.
- ALPHY Pre-Algebra online Textbook: the principal digital textbook and reference resource.
- Alphy School: Workbook, supplementary explanations, examples, revision materials, and practice activities.
- Mathematical tools: students may use a ruler, graph paper, and an approved calculator when appropriate.
What Students Should Bring to Learning
Success in Pre-Algebra depends on regular practice, careful organisation, active participation, and a willingness to persevere. Students should check Google Classroom regularly, complete assigned practice, bring the required materials, and ask for help whenever they are unsure.
Parent–Educator Communication
Email is the primary method of communication between the teacher and parents or guardians. Families are encouraged to contact the teacher whenever they have questions about course expectations, assignments, or student progress.
Every student can grow in mathematics.
With clear explanations, purposeful practice, and perseverance, Pre-Algebra becomes a strong foundation for future learning.
